Director of Music and Liturgy

Position Summary
The Director of Music and Liturgy leads the music ministry in alignment with the Ministry Leadership Team while reporting directly to the Pastor. The position is a member of the Ministry Leadership Team, preparing and leading music during parish and school liturgies (worship). The position prepares and leads the music for all weekend Masses and Holy Days, seeking to deepen full, active and conscious participation of everyone at prayer.

The ideal candidate has a:

  • Love for Christ Jesus and lives in the heart of His Church.
  • Proven singing voice and is proficient on piano (preferred), and/or organ and/or guitar.
  • Capacity and desire to lead, coach and develop individuals/groups in music and liturgy.
  • Good grasp of Catholic liturgy and the vital role of music during worship and a desire to inspire others.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Music

  • Plans and leads music for weekend Masses, Holy Days, Holy Week and weekly parochial school Masses (September – May).
  • Arranges music leadership for all Masses in his/her absence, working cooperatively with the Pastor and other Ministry Leadership Team members.
  • Promotes participation in parish and parochial school music ministry opportunities, training and encouraging those serving in choirs and as cantors and instrumentalists.
  • Works with the congregation to develop their deepening appreciation of sacred music, regularly introducing and teaching new congregational selections.
  • Assists the clergy in planning funeral and wedding liturgies, including consultation with families or couples and approves all music for funerals and weddings.
  • Recruits, trains, schedules and supervises cantors/song leaders at Masses, forming them in ways that ensure musical quality and promote congregational participation.

Liturgy

  • Works cooperatively with the Pastor and other members of the Ministry Leadership Team to recruit, train and schedule liturgical ministers – e.g. Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Altar Servers and Ushers/Hospitality Ministers.
  • Works cooperatively with the Pastor and Ministry Leadership Team members to create training and continuous spiritual development of all liturgical ministers.
  • Ministry Leadership Team contact for church decorating, particularly during the Christmas and Easter seasons, and enlists volunteers so that all setup, takedown, and upkeep (watering plants, etc.) are performed in a timely manner.
  • Assists with setup and cleanup for weddings, funerals, and other liturgies.
  • Oversees liturgical supplies and their acquisition in an economical manner.

Other

  • Participates as a Ministry Leadership Team member.
  • Ministry Leadership Team contact for all musical and liturgical inquires, working closely with the Pastor and ministry colleagues.
  • Participates in continuing education, spiritual enrichment and faith formation offerings as directed by the Pastor or recommended by the diocese.
  • Works cooperatively with the parish Protecting Youth Compliance Officer to ensure required personnel and adult volunteers are following all diocesan regulations.
  • Works cooperatively with the Business Manager to prepare an annual budget with liturgy and music.
  • Follows copyright laws.
  • Evaluates and suggests improvements for audio / visual systems (speakers, microphones, monitoring equipment, hearing impairment, monitors, etc…).
  • Maintains a clean and presentable church music/choir area, work sacristy and office/choir room.

Job Qualifications
Education/Experience/ Knowledge

  • Preference for Bachelor’s Degree in music
  • Demonstrated leadership and effective teamworking experience
  • Must have knowledge and ability to communicate effectively with people of various ages and backgrounds
  • Proven ability to organize, develop and lead congregational and choral music for liturgy
  • Understanding of the venerable place for music and liturgy within the life of the Church

Communication, Interpersonal, Technical Skill Sets

  • Ability to recruit, develop and empower lay volunteers and form and develop various choirs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High abilities in leading music and organizing liturgies
  • Utilizes a cooperative team-orientated approach to leadership and ministry
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and electronic communications
  • Basic understanding of electronic equipment used with music and liturgy

  • Active Catholic living in the heart of the Church.
