Last Sunday, we heard Jesus twice declare Himself as the gate – “I am the gate” (John 10:1-10). The gate to where? Well, Jesus explained He is “the gate” of the sheepfold (pen) protecting the sheep (church members) from which He calls the sheep (church members) who know His voice and follow Him safely into the pasture (heaven)
In today’s Gospel (John 14:1-12) Jesus’ previous image of the gate gives way to Him declaring that, “I am the way, the truth and the life” (v. 6). Last Sunday, Jesus makes clear that those who know Him – intentional disciples, genuine Christians – know His voice. Today He further clarifies that our task is to configure our lives of Him; He is “the way.”
Christianity is not about new and improved, but rather everything to do with imitation.
Instead of blazing our our trail, striving to make our own mark, seeking to announce an identity we are incapable of ever creating, Jesus instructs us to follow Him. Our task is sincerely trying each day to imitate Him. Thus, we never have to wonder what Jesus “would” do, only imitate what He did do.
And when we adopt Jesus’ Way – when we rely on God – it leads to truth and life. Following Jesus’ “Way”, enables God’s Truth and God’s Life to pour into the world through us and make positive impact.
