The wedding miracle at Cana in Galilee is Jesus’ first public display. His mother initiates the action when she plainly says to the servants, ““Do whatever he [Jesus] tells you” (John 2:5).

Mary knows Jesus’ words always are to be taken to heart.  The attendants do exactly as they have been instructed and follow Jesus’ word without question. They fill the six ceremonial jars and the water therein becomes wine. The miracle is observed and God’s Glory is seen through Jesus in what the Gospel writer describes as the beginning of Jesus’ signs, indicating that more are to come. (v. 11).

The mother of Jesus places all her trust in what Jesus says will happen does happen. She trusts in Jesus’ word. Her unwavering belief in Jesus’ words sets our standard for daily living as intentional disciples.
