Today is Sunday #2 of our 5 consecutive Sundays reading together select excepts from John 6.
Front and center for us is the deep misunderstanding of WHO Jesus is and WHAT He is doing (John 6:24-35). The crowd (from the miraculous feeding) only pursue Jesus to have Him fill their bellies again.
Jesus boldly declares a future promise: “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you” (v. 27 ). [My emphasis is placed upon Jesus’ future promise].
In the future, a gift will come from God through Jesus. Here a hint is given that later in the Gospel God’s gift to humanity will be obvious and it will last forever. This future gift will not merely give live, it will be the pathway to eternal life.
Our task is to believe in the One who has been sent by God and is God: Christ Jesus the Lord.
MASS CONSIDERATIONS
- When genuflecting or bowing before taking your seat, greet the Eucharistic Lord Jesus present in the Tabernacle in this way: “Lord Jesus, I believe. Help my unbelief.”
- Do the same approaching the Lord Jesus as you prepare to receive Him in the Eucharist.
