Preaching Notes – 19 Sunday in Ordinary Time (9 August 2026)

The moment PETER takes his eyes off of Jesus, the moment Peter’s first desire to be with Jesus gives way to something else, trouble happens.

The troubling change happens in Peter’s heart, not with the water and the storm.

Jesus’ sole instruction to Peter is: “Come!” As long as Peter obeys Jesus, everything goes well. But as soon as Peter starts to notice other things, trouble immediately follows.

Peter suddenly begins to wonder about the impossibility of what he is doing and the very thing Jesus told him not to do happens. The moment he takes his eyes off of Jesus, Peter begins to fear.

The change happens in Peter’s heart. He fails to love and trust Jesus, instead focusing himself.

Friends, hear Jesus speaking personally to you: “Take heart, I am. Be not afraid. Come!”
