Preaching Notes 2nd Sunday of Advent – 8 December 2024

Last Sunday we began our journey through the weeks of ADVENT with a strong focus on Jesus’ second and final ARRIVAL (cf. Luke 21)

Today, the 2nd Sunday of Advent, we hear a Gospel text from LUKE that is much closer to the start with the passage introducing the ministry of John the Baptist (Luke 3:1-6). It is a point of emphasis for Luke to that the events concerning Jesus of Nazareth take place in a definite period of time. The worldly and religious leaders Luke mentions by name are real historical figures. And these figures are listed from the most important worldly leader – Tiberias – through his representatives, through their Jewish subordinates and finally to the Jewish leaders themselves.

God’s Word does not come to any of these “worldly important” people, but instead comes to John, the son of Zechariah (v. 2). So, also, is the actual location where John receives God’s Word intentional. In the Bible, the desert is a neutral place. On one hand it can be a challenging place of trial and temptation, while it also is an open, spacious place devoid of the worldly lures that have ensnared the minds and hearts of many, including those listed leaders.

Throughout the Bible, God often is met in the desert as well as on a mountain.

Advent likens the desert. If your current moment is marked by difficulties, seek to find God in your struggle. Dare to call out to Him and expect Him to answer in a wonderfully personal way. For others beset by worldly ambitions and seeking relief from the always empty pursuance of wealth, power, pleasure and honor, make your way to the “desert” by unplugging and permitting yourself to hear the Word God so deeply desires to continue to speak to you.
