Preaching Notes – 2nd Sunday of Easter / Divine Mercy (12 April 2026)

Today’s First Reading provides a clear viewing of what was most important in the lives of the earliest community of believers.

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. (Acts 2:42)

  • they = the community of believers after Pentecost; the earliest Church
  • devoted = passionately commitment; no mere hobby or fleeting interest, but a defining lifestyle
  • apostles’ teaching = Christ sets the standard and the apostles are eyewitnesses to all Jesus said and did; Christian understanding of Sacred Scripture along with the basic truths and practices – the essentials of the Faith
  • fellowship = koinonia is a very difficult word to translate. It is a profound union of hearts brought about by the Holy Spirit, passionately shared common vision fueling fierce commitment to mission, deeply personal solidarity arising from their practice of the faith and grace God graciously has given
  • breaking of bread = Holy Eucharist. This is a special way the early Christians refer to the Sacrament of Jesus’ Body and Blood; Mass and receiving Holy Eucharist are the center of Christian worship
  • prayers = conversing regularly with God, with special consideration of the Our Father
