The EPIPHANY celebrates God having chosen to show Himself to everyone. In the person of Jesus Christ, God has entered the world AND in doing so has entered into the lives of all people of all races and cultures, of all times and places AND has saved them from sin and death AND prepared them for heaven.
The EPIPHANY renders a personal choice. Will we accept the wonder of what God has done for us?
The MAGI have no special privilege, no special advantage. All the MAGI do is to respond to the sign that comes form God. They chose to accept and be led by God’s wondrous works.
Meanwhile, the Chosen People in their Holy City with their Holy Scriptures are threatened when their comfortable “religion” is disturbed by Jesus. “When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.” (Matthew 2:3)
Heard what?
The Magi merely had asked, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” (v. 2)
Friends, we have received special privileges and advantages by means of having received sanctifying grace in Baptism and through our understanding and practice of our Catholic Faith.
Don’t miss God’s wondrous works! Don’t miss the wonder of God’s presence and power in our daily living, because it challenges our tidy little schemes. Jesus’ words and actions always disturb our comfort because they summon us to greater love.
It is one thing to say we have our answers in the person and teaching of Jesus as members of His Church.
It is quite another to dare to live lives that show beyond a shadow doubt such answers really are true.
