Jesus’ teaching goes far beyond practicing good manners when He says, “When you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place” (Luke 14:10).
Throughout Luke’s Gospel, Jesus reverses the established order. So, too, do we recognize Jesus’ consistent reproach against those insisting upon their privileged access to God because of high status, elevated position and looking religious.
Today’s Gospel makes known the blessed way into God’s Kingdom is to grow small. Those daring sincerely to love God and love others will draw closer to God in contrast to those scheming to be noticed.
Wherever we enter, are we scanning the scene for self-promoting opportunities or instead noticing who appears alone, left out, uncomfortable and needing assistance so we can serve Christ in them?
Intentional disciples know that humility fuels the on-going adventure that is holiness.
