Someone asked him [Jesus], “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He answered them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.” (Luke 13:23-24)
Jesus explains that salvation involves some measure of work. We are expected always to give our best. Salvation does not depend upon superior knowledge nor is it a reward for being a part of Jesus’ company on His way to Jerusalem. More is required; namely, a free and courageous human response to God’s gracious gifts plays a role in the story of our salvation.
The crucial question is not “how many,” but rather, “how”?
