Just prior to Jesus’ Ascension, the disciples are at the edge of a new beginning. They ask Jesus if He is going to restore the kingdom (Acts 1:6). Translation: is everything finally about to be made perfect?
Jesus’ answer? My rising from the dead and ascending into heaven is not a perfect ending, but rather it’s a new beginning.
8th grade graduates, you are in the very same space as the disciples:
this is not a perfect ending, but it’s a new beginning!
With the new beginning, Jesus promises: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses.” (v. 8)
The biblical word “power” is dynamis – the same word from which comes our word dynamite. Jesus’ promise for the new beginning is an impressive power that is able to be received from the Holy Spirit.
- It’s the power that will make you faithful in friendships.
- It’s the power that will moves you to be generous and grateful.
- It’s the power that will inspire you to do what’s right even when that’s hard to do.
Just as Jesus tells the disciples I am sending you into the world to make the world better everywhere you go, look out world because here you come!
